weeks ago, even though my mother was tested for the brca gene and said to get the genetic test anyway, has your father been tested? and i got the, testing came back positive. and so i was planning on getting the preventative surgery. that was my choice. because of a 60 and 90% of getting breast cancer. and what i wanted for my scans to get the preventative surgery, and this is all in the matter of three weeks they found cancer. and so that test saved my life had i not got in the test, i would ve gotten the scans and we would be telling a very different story. so i feel super grateful to be here to be able to say, talk to your doctors and go get tested. and i have mine here. i don t know what s going to happen. but i know that while i m healing and while i m resting, and while i prepped for the second surgery, everyone can go out and get their genetic testing and their families can. no because my dad is such a private person. but he said, other families shouldn t have to go through. t
here. and, jill, you have some personal things you d like to share with us today. hi. it s kind of like an out of body experience. yes, i have been diagnosed with breast cancer. and it feels like someone else telling the story. the last thing before we go, tonight, a life saving test. our dear friend at the today show, joe martin, announced her breast cancer diagnosis and is turning the difficult experience into an opportunity to educate others on the importance of genetic testing. i ll let my friend jill explain. six weeks ago, i went to get i was up on my mama grounds. i want to january. a history of breast cancer in my family, and my grandmother died of breast cancer. my beautiful. mother my mother had a double healthy now. and my mammogram was clear in january and up on my test. and then the doctor said, six
before or after. femininity comes from within. it s normal to be overwhelmed by the mortality of it and what you did makes me think that you know how to take care of yourself. you have already probably saved a life as a result of your experience. those are incredibly brave women. i m so grateful they shared their stories and so much more because they actually showed me their mastectomies because at the end of the day the reconstruction all of them have reconstruction i needed to see that. i needed to understand it. not just in pictures. now i want to bring in someone who has been very important to me throughout this journey. she s my doctor. my second opinion. the chief of breast services at memorial sloan kettering cancer center. thank you for being here. i want to start right without with the brca gene test. three women i talked to tested positive and made this decision to go ahead and have a double mastectomy. is that typically the decision that you would recommend? women with
