Democrats claim victory in 144th House District of Stamford

Democrats claimed victory Tuesday night in the special election in the 144th House District of Stamford, holding onto a seat that Democrat Caroline Simmons wrested from Republicans in 2014. Democrat Hubert Douglas Delany outpolled Republican Danny Melchionne for the seat Simmons vacated after her election as mayor in November. Unofficial results showed him winning with nearly 56% of the vote. Turnout was 18.9%.  Neither candidate has held elective office.

Norwich  The 36th annual Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration Friday had to forego the traditional luncheon and camaraderie that usually marks the popular event, but speeches, award presentations and prayers all focused on different aspects of the historic recent months and weeks. The theme for this year’s celebration, “When We Dare to Dream, We Strive to Build,” will be carried over to another virtual Martin Luther King Jr. Day online march and program at 2 p.m. Monday. Speakers on Friday noted the historic racial equality protests throughout the country last spring and summer, the election of the first African American female vice president and the horrific images of the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

The Norwich branch of the NAACP, the Robertsine Duncan Youth Council and Norwich Free Academy will co-host the virtual 36th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration, March and Service. The theme for this year’s celebration is “When We Dare to Dream, We Strive to Build.” The virtual birthday celebration will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, with state Rep. Brandon L. McGee Jr., D-Hartford, delivering the keynote speech. The 2021 Robertsine Duncan Memorial Award, given to an individual or organization for outstanding youth service and advocacy, will be presented to Celia Seifert, volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul Place soup kitchen.
