Im here today with jake halpern, the author of a fascinating and horrifying new book ba bad paper chasing dt from wall street to the underworld. Cheka, welcome. Guest thanks for having me. Host this book is incredible. And so was your story. I think the to really mirror each other. This takes place in buffalo, new york, a lot of it. Youre from there, argue . Guest thats right. I grew up there. Like that and his wife still live there. I go back there fairly often and so i find my way in this world. Host you talk about a particular, many unsavory characters that are scrambling to make their own peace of the world and often have prison records and have been drug dealers and so forth.
Balance, date the account was opened, one or two other fields, but thats basically about it. And theyre just being bought and sold by email, sent by thumb drives, and that is the paper. They call it paper, but thats really all that it is. And as you can imagine, it doesnt take much for something to go wrong, for some of the fields to get mixed up, the amounts the debtors names to get confused or for someone to sell the same excel spread sheet to multiple unsuspecting buyers who are all collecting on it at once. So in my book i followed the package, what i call the package, in this one piece of debt. Its about 48 million in its face value, but which is bought for pennies on the dollar by this debt buyer in buffalo whose name is aaron segal. This piece of debt gets stolen. Somehow aaron finds out from his collectors. They start calling him saying, aaron, Something Weird is going on with these accounts. It appears that somebody else has access to this information and is collecting the mon
A lot of rage against the war in vietnam. I have a lot of rage against male supremacy. I had a lot of rage about injustices around race. And all of those things rushed into my mind and my politics in the fall of 1969 when i was a freshman in college. Thats what i met all those problems and almost issues and recognize them as problems, people disagreed with me were just wrong. And so either they had to be convinced or the words worth talking to. And then, of course, as you get older, you realize some of the things you thought might have been wrong and they might not even the best strategies, and that you really do need people coming at issues from different perspectives, and that there other ways to deal with the problems in the world than just raging against them. It is a sort of perspective, give me a sort of perspective that allowed me to hear what other people were saying that, when they disagreed with it, and to actually incorporate some of that thinking into my own ideas. Your pledges and you dont have at the right to explain to me what conservative is. I know what it is. There are passionate conservatives in the republican part who believe in it as a noble tradition who can have opinions on a myriad of different issues. And i think when if the country saw someone with that passion and that sort of ingenuity emerge and do that in a compelling fashion in the 2016 election, thats someone who could appeal to a lot of voters beyond the republican party.
