Jasper, Ga. – Since last winter, the City of Jasper has been discussing changes to its salaries and pay scale. Now, the city is seriously looking at a base rate of $13 per hour.
In addition, council member Jim Looney said, as he began discussion on the topic, that he also wanted to look at the “possibility of raising our hourly position by one dollar at the same time.” Still more, Looney also requested looks at moving from weekly pay to bi-weekly pay.
Looney and Mayor Steve Lawrence reiterated this is the beginning of the process as they will be “looking at” these changes. The city is not fully imposing changes yet, simply studying what the costs and results could be. With the accounting software capable of making the process easier to handle, Looney said he understood there is a burden on employees. Samuel Frederick Nixon IV “Rick” of Austin, Texas, formerly of Mayville, N.Y., passed away on April 14, 2021.
He was born on June 18, 1953, in Jamestown, N.Y., to the late Samuel Frederick and Millie (Hall) Nixon III. He attended Nichols School in Buffalo, N.Y., before graduating from Hamburg High School in 1971. He later attended Baldwin Wallace University.
Rick spent his summers in the Chautauqua Institution working on the infamous “most handsome” garbage truck crew. It was there that he joined the Aardvarks softball team and became their star pitcher. With Rick’s competitive nature and love of all things sports related he would be delighted to be remembered by the one time the Aardvarks defied all odds coming from seven runs behind the Charlie Brown All-Stars when Rick slammed a home run and drove in three runs helping bring the final score to 15-10.

An entire shift of Jasper firefighters has been placed on probation after asking for a raise.
JASPER, Ga - An entire shift of firefighters was put on probation for a year and a lieutenant was demoted. There is still a lot of turmoil in Jasper surrounding the fire department.
It all started with firefighters wanting a raise. The current starting pay is $11.67 an hour. We all love working for the city, it s a great place to work but times have changed it s a little harder to live off the money we re making, said Zack Petty who has been with the department for 14 years.
