MSNBC The Daily Rundown August 21, 2013

Good morning from new york city. Its wednesday, august 21st. Its the daily rundown. My first reads of it the mornin. Were going to start with some domestic politics. The state of both Political Parties is anything but strong these days. The only reason there isnt much hand ringing about the Democratic Party is because the Republican Party is the one in such disa ray. The open warfare has become a more public spectacle than weve seen in years. Many Republican Leaders are exhausted from dealing with the tea party and some seem to be downright giddy over whats happened in the last week. They dont put their name on their giddiness. Not even 250 days old and already hes become probably among the most recognizable faces of the tea party these days and one of congress most polarize figures and thats just within the Republican Party. Hes a hit with Tea Party Conservatives and a thorn in the republican establishment. In texas tuesday night, cruz served up the red meat to conservative, vowing to

Washington. Its friday, february 15th, its tthe daily rundown. Im chuck todd. President obama is standing by his embattled nominee for secretary of defense, chuck hagel, as hagels former Senate Republican colleagues put up a major roadblock yesterday in their attempts to not just delay the nomination, but try to kill it. The yeas are 58, the nays are 40. One senator announced present. And with that senate vote, chuck hagel came up short of a 60vote filibuster roadblock that Senate Republicans demanded, delaying what could still be hagels eventual confirmation vote by at least two weeks. Four republicans, mississippis thad cochran, susan collins, mike johannes, and Lisa Murkowski voted. President obama was emphatic during a google plus question and answer session. My expectation and hope is that chuck hagel, who richly deserves to get a vote on the floor of the senate, will be confirmed as our defense secretary. Its just unfortunate that this kind of politics intrudes at a time when im

The press. Yes, there will be a surprise today. Im told it might be a guest and it might not. Whatever. Come on, producers, the point is stick around. Theres nothing like a little live tv fun, right . Lets get right to my first read of the morning. Is the Midterm Election amounting to nothing more than dueling banjos strumming the theme songs from your favorite disaster movies . With a little over two months to go until eday, thats just 68 days, folks, its still not clear what the selection is going to be about issue wise. In an election lacking a pivotal issue, the parties are turning to a unifying emotion, good oldfashioned fear. In the last week you can feel both parties trying to take one issue in particular and use it to instill substantial fear in voters. Remember, there havent been very many voters at all in this primary season, so lets hope against all odds it doesnt add to that sad trend. For democrats, the fear factor they want to put out there means reviving anything and eve

Years ago. Plus, chuck todd, live from the first leg of his meet the voters tour in kansas and iowa and chats with greg orman. Good morning, im kristen welker. This is the daily rundown. Canada, a nation shaken by a brazen deadly attack in the heart of its capital city that could permanently change the way she views national security. This morning, the message is one of resolve. An hour from now, the Canadian Parliament will convene. After a gunman got off dozens of shots before being gunned down. Prime minister harper addressed his country. Attacks on our security personnel and on our institutions of governments are, by their very nature, attacks on our country. On our values. On our society. As a free and Democratic People who embrace Human Dignity for all. Let there be no misunderstanding. We will not be intimidated. Canada will never be intimidated. As he spoke, parts of ottawa were still in lockdown. The safety perimeter wouldnt be lifted until nearly 8 30 last night, when police
