Local push to stop demolition of remaining mill

Staff Writer memara@fortfrances.com The paper mill in Fort Frances has been under demolition for almost a year, beginning in the fall of 2020. Because the mill’s significance is carved in the memory of many Fort Frances residents, many hoped that a new owner would return it to a functioning pulp manufacturing business. However, permit after permit has been issued for demolition and buildings have been brought down, along with any chance to bring a revival to fruition. Even though a demolition permit has been given to the Kraft Mill, the Town of Fort Frances has not received a demolition request for the Biomass Boiler.

Coming up on council tonight

Staff Writer memara@fortfrances.com Tonight will be the only meeting of the month for the Fort Frances council. The next meeting will take place on August 9. Tonight Mayor June Caul will announce the recipients of the Moffat Family Fund Grant. The Committee of the Whole will also be receiving a letter presenting information about Boundary Waters Forest Management Corporation (BWFMC). The letter is submitted by Geoff Gillion, Tannis Drysdale and Mike Willick. This letter was in response to a request by Caul to have a formal report on the Sustainable Forest License and the BWFMC. The mayor requested that the report include an up-to-date list of the shareholders of the BWFMC, details of the ownership structure, including how many shares, and the types of shares each shareholder of the BWFMC holds, all pertinent details regarding the current enhanced Sustainable Forest License (eSFL) for the Boundary Waters Forest, and the previous Sustainable Forest License (SFL) for the Cross
