could seek asylum. what they re saying is now, they re allowing 30,000 individuals from each country per month to apply for asylum. they re encouraging them to do this from their home countries through a system that s been put in place and as long as they have a sponsor here in the u.s., they pass a basic security vet and they don t, again, do this by crossing illegally at the border, they would potentially qualify for two years of status here in the u.s. now what the white house is saying, this is based on what has been a largely successful program for venezuela asylum seekers that cut down the numbers coming to the border 90%. this is an example that has been reported of slamming shut the door but opening a window to allow additional pathways and try to deal with the flows at the border. they re announcing some ramped-up enforcement mechanisms at the border. judges, immigration judges, border security resources to the border to deal with those
