Following some hard work by one of its councillors, the Town of Fort Frances is set to rename Colonization Road, scoring a significant victory for those working toward reconciliation and dismantling racism in the region.
Coun. Douglas Judson first brought the idea back to the table in November of last year, after Fort Frances’s city council previously passed on changing the name of the road in 2017. Despite some hiccups in the process, Colonization Road’s eastern half is now set to be renamed to Agamiing Road, an Anishinaabe word meaning “by the shore” or “at the lake.” The western half of the road will become Sunset Road, and the changes are expected to come into effect by Jan. 1, 2022, in order to give local residents time to prepare and update their official addresses.
