Devastation struck at Wilder Ranch State Park, Sunday evening. The area hardest hit was the park's historic complex. A thick layer of mud was left in the historic cow barn, three feet of water inundated the visitor center and park store, and an electric fence got swept away.
"He was especially good at getting coalitions put together on a campaign-by-campaign basis," said Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley. "Everything he did was rooted in a value system, a belief system, and that really didn't change over 35 or 40 years."
Representatives from California State Parks, Save the Redwoods League, and Waddell Creek Association celebrated the grand opening of the new Rancho del Oso Welcome Center Saturday morning. The new center serves as a gateway to the western coastal side of Big Basin Redwoods State Park.
To commemorate the Scholl Marr Castle that once stood at Seabright State Beach or "Castle Beach" as it is still known to longtime Seabright residents, Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, the Seabright Neighbors Association and California State Parks installed interpretive signage telling the castle's story, and held a ribbon-cutting for the signs and a brand new gate for the beach, long beloved by locals and visitors alike.
