Augustinian Father Gus Esposito, teacher and mentor, dies at age 69

Augustinian Father Gus Esposito CatholicPhilly.com staff report • Posted January 12, 2021 Augustinian Father Augustine Michael “Gus” Esposito, a widely known and admired religious priest, spiritual director, mentor to seminarians, educator and preacher died Jan. 9 at Bryn Mawr Hospital from COVID-19. He was 69 and in the 47th year of religious life. Father Esposito was a professor of Spanish, spiritual director and head of the apostolic formation program at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, Wynnewood. Bishop Timothy Senior, seminary rector, said in a statement that it was “with sadness” that he informed the seminary community of Father Esposito’s death in the hospital, where “his three sisters were with him praying as he died.”

Story” on Philadelphia’s WHYY PBS station happens this Sunday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. It may also be accessed live here. The half-hour program celebrates the life of Augustinian Father William Atkinson (1946-2006). Despite a horrendous accident as a young seminarian, he went on to be the first quadriplegic man ever ordained to the priesthood. He followed this with an inspirational three-decade teaching career at his alma mater, Msgr. Bonner High School.
