The Three River Fire has spread to 4000 acres, according to officials. (CNN)The Three Rivers Fire has grown from burning 4,000 to 12,000 acres in New Mexico, according to a press release on the New Mexico Fire Information site.
As of late Tuesday local time, the fire, which is burning about 60 miles northeast of White Sand National Park and about three hours south of Albuquerque, was five percent contained. The fire started ½ a mile north of Three Rivers Campground and has spread almost to Ski Apache and into the South Fork Bonito area, the release said.
The fire is being driven by steep terrain and extreme fire weather conditions, including gusty winds and low humidity levels around 8 percent, the release said.

Crews battling a wildfire burning in southern New Mexico got an assist from a second day of wetter weather on Wednesday. Rain and snow are falling again today, which is lessening fire activity, according to an update posted at 11 a.m. MDT. Up to a half inch of rain is expected on portion of the fire. Precipitation and higher humidity levels around 30% will slow the fire.
But officials warned that erratic winds along mountain ridges in the area of the fire were expected to continue.

UPDATE: Authorities on Tuesday afternoon lifted evacuation orders for some of the areas impacted by the Three Rivers Fire as 150 firefighters worked to try and gain an upper hand on the 6,100 acre blaze burning near Ruidoso.
Evacuation orders were lifted for the following areas:
Ski Run Road up to the Eagle Lakes turn
Villa Madonna
The Bonito corridor below the Bonito Lake dam (Tanbark will remain CLOSED as it is above the dam)
