Gujarat s State Health Minister, Rushikesh Patel, announced that Rs 671 crore has been collected from MBBS doctors who did not serve for one year in rural areas post-education. An additional Rs 270 crore is yet to be recovered from such doctors. Under the state s bond policy, medical students receiving subsidized education must work in rural government health setups. Those unwilling to comply must pay Rs 20 lakh. Patel clarified that the state cannot stop universities from granting degrees to such students. Gujarat currently has 7,050 medical seats, with 1,350 new seats introduced in the last two years.
