appearance, meaning her physical appearance at the grammys, has inspired such strong thoughts from people? reporter: well, i think that women as they age are really in a double bind. if she had looked old, we would be saying she looks older, she looks tired. what s going on there? and instead, she showed up having a very different face than people were used to seeing her wear. and people aren t liking that either. so i think that it is really a double bind and a tough situation for female celebrities to be in as they age. i see it a little differently. i see it a little bit, the way i see anorexia. which is, it s like body dismorphia. when you see somebody like that, you think, is she not seeing what we re seeing? when she looks in the mirror, what does she see? that s why i found it a little jarring. because she didn t look recognizable and i think we re
kids question their own identity, and honestly, i don t think that s good. sandra: and you think about the age that they put on a lot of their products is for girls around 8 years old, and many times they are much younger than that. they have a following above that as well. i think of single digit numbers, an entire chapter in here to body dismorphia, and will read about this the first time and not coming interest a parent but a book and says if you can t talk to your parent, go around them and to these resources. to your point, caitlyn, thank you very much for joining us on this as you mentioned, everybody is talking about it and it is something. everybody is. i just want to give a lot of encouragement to the young girls out there. it s ok, you are going to get through this, no matter what it is. sandra: great message.
images related to beauty. social comparison is worse on instagram because it is perceived as real life, but based on celebrity standards. social comparison mimics the grief cycle and includes a downward emotional spiral encompassing the range of emotions from jealousy to self-proclaimed body dismorphia. which facebook called problematic use. is most severe in teens piquing at age 14. facebook is not interested in making significant changes to improve kids safety on their platforms. at least not when that would result in losing eyeballs on posts or decreasing their administrative revenues.
