Assembly Elections In 5 States: Implications For National Politics Published by GulteDesk May 03, 2021
The vibrancy of India’s political spectrum is once again evident from the people’s verdict in five states. India’s national polity is a total of state-level political spectra. The regional and smaller parties constitute half of India’s political space for several decades. The BJP could successfully trounce its national rival Congress. The grand old party has no face, narrative to offer as an alternative to the BJP. The congress, as Prashant Kishore puts it, lacks fire and zeal to take on mighty electoral machine of BJP led by the Modi-Shah duo. On the contrary, the regional satraps could successfully take on the Modi juggernaut. This is the essence of mandate in the five assembly elections.

The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) is leading in 216 seats while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in 73 seats as per trends at 6:30 pm.
The polls
West Bengal has a total of 294 assembly seats out of which two did not go to the polls due to the death of two candidates ahead of the seventh phase. Polling in these two seats will be held on May 16.
This means that the magic figure that a party or alliance needs to achieve to form the government is 147.
Polling was spread over eight phases - the longest electoral exercise in the state s history - and the last round concluded on April 29.

New Delhi: In the 2016 assembly elections, the BJP was in a pre-poll alliance with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodo Peopleâs Front (BPF). Together, the three parties won 86 of the 126 assembly seats of the state. While the AGP contested 24 seats and won 14, the BPF contested 16 seats and won 12 of them.
The Congress which had ruled the state for three consecutive terms under the chief ministership of Tarun Gogoi, contested 122 seats in the 2016 assembly polls but could win only 26 of them. It lost 53 seats in that election and was forced to form the opposition. In May 2016, a BJP-led government was formed with Sarbananda Sonowal as its chief minister.
Opinion and exit polls were of one voice about the outcome of the Assembly elections that concluded on Thursday with the last phase of polling in West Bengal: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is heading for a Tamil Nadu sweep; the NR Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will likely form the government in Puducherry; the BJP will retain Assam; and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) will return to power in Kerala.
The exception was West Bengal. While some exit polls gave an edge to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, others said the BJP was heading towards power in the state. However, it is clear that the BJP is set to make historic gains in Bengal, both in terms of vote share and the number of seats. The growth is clearly at the expense of the TMC, which is expected to drop anything between 30 and 50 seats.
