Speaker Michael Jett
STEUBENVILLE The Sycamore Youth Center, 301 N. Fourth St., is finalizing plans to host this weekend’s Serve Ohio Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service/Celebration.
It will involve a community service day combined with an MLK birthday celebration and an evening online concert on Facebook “Live,” explained Bobbyjon Bauman, center director.
“We were able to secure a small grant from Serve Ohio from the state of Ohio to help cover our expenses for a service day event, and we are thrilled to have local minister Michael Jett of Mount Zion Baptist Church of Steubenville who started and currently leads the Generation Now youth ministry there be our speaker,” Bauman noted.

From 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, the Sycamore Youth Center at 301 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, will be giving away 100 shoeboxes filled with Christmas gifts gathered from a number of area churches in West Virginia through the initiative of Youth Pastor Richard Davis of Open Door Baptist Church in Colliers. “It is similar to the Operation Christmas Child program but for local children,” explained Bobbyjon Bauman, center director.
“All children ages grades kindergarten through eight are welcome to pick up a box,” he said. “They will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and no paperwork is required for verification of income level, but we request that if you have enough gifts for your children you pass on the word to those who have a need for gifts for their kids or grandkids.” With Bauman, right, and some of the shoeboxes are Richard and Cynthia Davis of Open Door Baptist of Colliers.
