The town of Silver City received $500,000 in state capital improvement funds from this year’s legislative session for ongoing repairs to the Silver City Waterworks Building, originally built by a private company in 1887 to furnish water for the town’s first water supply system. Known as the “Rock House,” it is the only surviving stone building from this era in Silver City.

Councilors approved a resolution Tuesday evening directing Town Manager Alex Brown to apply for funding for the final phase of the town’s ongoing Ridge Road reconstruction project. The current $2.7 million phase will see Silver City’s busy southern artery rebuilt from N.M. 90 to Bob White Drive over the next several months, including bike lanes, curbs and gutters and a sidewalk on the east side of the road. As designed, the town’s project will eventually extend to Silver City limits near Lance Drive, from which point Grant County has future plans to extend similar improvements all the way to the Grant County Detention Center.
