New Kensington garbage hauler promises to work with city following alleged thefts by employees

Trouble with garbage collection? New Kensington officials are asking residents who have a problem with their trash pickup to call city hall. The number is 724-337-4523. Following reports of thefts by its employees, New Kensington says the city’s garbage hauler has promised to improve communication with the city and keep it aware of its trucks’ whereabouts. Representatives of city council met with County Hauling last week to discuss performance issues and resident complaints. “It was a good meeting. They understood all of our issues and complaints and took it very seriously,” Mayor Tom Guzzo said. “We’re not going to tolerate any more issues from them. They have a firm understanding, and they agreed.”

A man from Pittsburgh’s Lincoln-Lemington neighborhood was sent to Westmoreland County Prison without bail Wednesday because police said he threatened to kill police officers and their families as soon as he gets out of jail. New Kensington police said they arrested Daevar Lamont Stevens, 21, about 7 p.m. Tuesday after an officer saw him walking in the 1300 block of Leishman Avenue. Police Chief Bob Deringer said Stevens was wanted on a warrant accusing him of receiving stolen property.

County Hauling fires 2 after thefts from New Kensington residents

TribLIVE s Daily and Weekly email newsletters deliver the news you want and information you need, right to your inbox. New Kensington’s garbage hauler fired two employees after residents reported thefts of a package and Christmas lights, the company and city officials confirmed Thursday. It makes for a troubling start for the new one-year contract between New Kensington and County Hauling, which council approved in December despite past concerns over the company’s service. “In my opinion, this is 100% completely unacceptable,” Councilman Todd Mentecki said. “I’m hoping this is an isolated incident.” City Clerk Dennis Scarpiniti said a resident reported a County Hauling employee took a package from their front porch last week. Christmas lights were taken in another incident.

A New Kensington man was arraigned Wednesday on a felony charge of aggravated assault stemming from a fight in which two men suffered brain bleeds and one had skull fractures. Police charged Kenneth Lorenzo Johnson Jr., 32, on Nov. 17 in connection with the fight that happened June 12 at the Quality Inn on Tarentum Bridge Road. A search of online court records showed no charges against three other men involved in the fight, including the two alleged victims who were hurt. Police Chief Bob Deringer did not respond to requests for comment.
