The Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva has received positive comments like “It was way more fun than I expected” and “Island artists really stepped up for Zonta” about its recent fundraiser.
The club reported that it is looking back at the “Peek at the Unique 2021 Repurposed” with satisfaction and gratitude. It created a more virtual format for the event that still offered unique elements, but was far from the traditional guided tour of island homes that has been the club’s signature March contribution for nearly 20 years. Instead of loading “Peekers” on to buses, it set up an online auction and invited local artists to donate works. Over 30 artists and two galleries, the Tower Gallery on Sanibel and the

The Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva is still booking appraiser appointments for March 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as part of “Peek at the Unique Repurposed,” its re-imagined annual fundraiser for 2021.
For a $100 tax-deductible donation, people can receive a 15-minute session with a gem-jewelry expert or an antiques appraiser with “Antiques Roadshow” experience for up to three items. The items will be informally assessed at the Blue Giraffe in Beachview Estates; COVID-19 protections will be observed.
“Retiring and moving to Sanibel, many of us downsized from larger homes and brought favorite items to new homes here,” event co-chairs and Zontians Barbara Beran and Halle Smith said. “Our idea is to bring them for evaluation, then you can display them prominently because they turn out to be valuable or finally discard them, having hung on to them for too long.”

“Jump for Joy,” a giclee from the estate of Ikki Matsumoto.
During the last half of the 20th Century, Sanibel’s reputation as an artist colony grew. Artists such as Ikki Matsumoto, Katie Gardenia and Charles McCullough became household names, inspired by the island’s ambience to develop their talent and build a community. Other artists followed, drawn to the qualities and Sanibel’s beauty.
The Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva is offering a chance to own a piece of art from these and other prominent artists in its “Peek at the Unique Repurposed” online auction, which replaces its traditional tour of island homes for just this year.
