one it gives rosenstein and mueller breathing room. makes it a lot less likely that the president would terminate either of them at least in the near future. it also validates to some extent what the president has been saying when he was saying there was no collusion. we haven t done anything. if mueller has been investigating this for some time now and the president is not a target of the investigation, that tells you something. now, the thing to keep in mind, of course, is that someone s status as a nontarget can always change. as the investigation continues, mueller may gather more evidence. so just because you are not a target now, doesn t mean you will never be. but i think today is definitely a good day for the president based on these reports. neil: it sounds like, rosenstein had with the president was post of the personal attorney s offices getting raided by fbi officials. but just quoting from this bloomberg report, rosenstein apparently brought up the mural probe himself wi
breaking and handled it all flawlessly as he always does. to bring you up to date and the reason we are focusing to the degree we are. unusual confluence of events and one, of course, involved andy mccabe the andy mccabe the number two at the justice department now seems to be at odds with stories going against his former boss and what he is saying in the middle of a book tour and now the inspector general saying that there is enough evidence here to make a criminal referral to the u.s. attorney s office that andy mccabe lied to federal investigators, not once, but at least three times, four times in all. three times you hear is the number when it comes to federal investigators. each time you lie to them that is punishable by up to five years in prison. yet, the bigger story that broke minutes after that one a report first in bloomberg and confirmed by others that rod rosenstein had met with the president and volunteered to him that the president, he, donald trump, was not the subject
was, and i quote, the right decision, quoting mr. meadows, it is about time we have some accountability. justice department. so where is this going? if you are andy mccabe, what are you looking at here? yeah. as i said, not a good day, it s a dark day for andy mccabe. here s the thing, neil, the fact that this referral came from the inspector general carries a lot of weight i think in law enforcement circles. the inspector general is not viewed as a partisan official. neil: he is obama appointee michael horowitz. this is not someone who has a political ax to grind. one thing. another thing independent investigatory watchdog who writes a searing report followed by a criminal referral. of course the ball is in the court of the department of justice, specifically the u.s. attorney s office and the district of columbia to decide whether to prosecute. just because the inspector general makes a criminal referral doesn t necessarily mean that there has to be a prosecution but we nei
deal from his old boss james comey and the inspector general, quote: the report failed to adequately address the evidence, including sworn testimony and documents that proved mr. mccabe advised director comey repeatedly that he was working with the wall street journal. neither mr. comey or the inspector general is infallible and in this case neither of them has it right. meantime two congressional sources tell fox news the seven comey memos that memorialize his communications with president trump could be delivered to capitol hill within the next few hours. the justice department was under an obligation, if you will, to deliver those memos and we understanding that the house judiciary committee chairman bob goodlatte just this afternoon was drafting a subpoena to make that happen, neil. and as you mentioned, in the last few minutes, that bloomberg report of the deputy attorney general rod rosenstein told the president during a private meeting last week, rosenstein apparently raising
neil: if you think about what this whole development and today just means to james comey the former fbi fired by president trump, his number two is deep, deep trouble right now. inspector general appointed by barack obama has said of andy mccabe that he lied, not once, not twice, not three times. four times. but three times to federal officials. federal investigators. each time that s a crime. each time you re proven to have done it, five years in jail if found guilty on the ig has already sent out a report recommending this action. and it comes at a time when everything is about who do you trust and how do you trust? already mr. comey has said that i still believe andy mccabe is a good person but the ig found that he lied. and, of course, mr. comey s lawyers, mr. mccabe s lawyers have had very differing views on all of this. but it is, in a word, a mess. defense attorney ted
