Overtime loss ends Pride’s stellar playoff run
PROVIDENCE – After three quarters of play, it looked like Blackstone Valley Prep was on its way to capturing its first RIIL boys’ basketball championship.
Thanks to a nine-point run in the final five minutes of the third quarter, the Pride owned a 34-26 command and plenty of momentum in last Saturday afternoon’s Division III title game against Times2 Academy at Rhode Island College’s Murray Center.

BVP celebrates student with Rock Your Socks event
Giuliana Salvatore’s teacher, Casey Rainha, had her students at Blackstone Valley Prep write down what they learned about Down syndrome on these colorful paper socks and will participate in Rock Your Socks, a Down syndrome awareness event, on Friday, March 19.
CUMBERLAND – In many ways, Giuliana Salvatore is just like any other 10-year-old. She goes to school, enjoys spending time with her friends, and experiences a range of emotions, from happy to sad and everything in between.
But what makes Salvatore, of Pawtucket, daughter of Andrea Riquetti and Ralph Salvatore, special, say those close to her, is that she has Down syndrome, which will be celebrated by her school, Blackstone Valley Prep Mayoral Academy in Cumberland, for World Down Syndrome Day. The event takes place on March 21 because people with Down syndrome have a third copy of their 21st chromosome, but since that’s a Sunday this year, the BVP commun
Big changes are afoot in the nation’s smallest state.
In the middle of Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo’s second term, the chief executive was tapped by the Biden administration for the position of U.S. commerce secretary. After a friendly Senate hearing Jan. 26 and a 21-3 vote in Raimondo’s favor from a preliminary committee, the Ocean State native is expected to advance to Washington once the full Senate body votes on her confirmation in the coming days or weeks. Now, amid a global pandemic that has caused dangers such as suicide, malnutrition, and severe learning loss to spike among youth, Lt. Gov. Dan McKee, a former small-town mayor, prepares to assume the state’s top job.

LINCOLN – After meeting in executive session to discuss the potential sale of the former Fairlawn Elementary School on Tuesday, Lincoln’s Town Council members remained tight-lipped about the status of the deal.
The council voted unanimously on Tuesday to “instruct the council president to act as directed in executive session” regarding the sale of the school.
What, exactly, Council President Keith Macksoud has been asked to do, remains unclear. Pressed for more information after the meeting, Macksoud told The Breeze he could not say any more on the matter.

Athletic center, concession stand, among goals
LINCOLN – Among the projects Lincoln school leaders are looking to invest in are a new student athletic center and concession stand, relocating the school district’s administrative offices, selling Fairlawn School and a potential addition to Lonsdale Elementary.
There are stipulations involved with each, but school officials doubled-down on their commitment to the list of goals during Monday’s School Committee meeting. The ultimate objective, they said, is to complete the projects with little to no additional taxpayer funding.
The town is expecting to have about $6.7 million in reimbursement funds available to spend as a result of the Lincoln High School renovation/construction project. Bond premium money is being earmarked for each of the following projects, except for the concession stand and Fairlawn School sale.
