Americans Deserve True Black History, Not Lies From The 1619 Project
February 19, 2021
When I attended last year’s White House Black History Month reception, it appeared few of us took note that it was the 50th anniversary of such observances. Then George Floyd and Black Lives Matter happened, seemingly changing things forever particularly a reevaluation of the black experience.
Concerted efforts to commemorate black history go back almost a century. In 1926, black historian Carter G. Woodson designated the second week in February as “Negro History Week.” He selected the days between the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln on the 12th and Frederick Douglass on the 20th.

Black History Month (BHM) is celebrated in the United States from February 1 to March 1 annually. During Black History Month, also known as African American History Month, the lives and accomplishments of Black Americans are celebrated. It is also a time to reflect on their struggle and criticize harmful systemic racism and daily discrimination these very same people endure throughout their lives. BHM is a time to learn, ask questions, teach,
listen and educate ourselves about the impact of these hurts and joys. For the month of February, an article will be published each week to illuminate Black history and the ways it has uplifted individuals, communities, peoples, democracy, the United States and the World. Black writers, photographers and artists are invited to submit their contributions to The Lawrentian as a feature or as an ongoing project. Your voices are important, and we want to hear them.
Black History Month was first celebrated in October 1987 in the UK, on the 150th anniversary of Caribbean emancipation, and has always celebrated the vast contributions African-Caribbean citizens have made to the UK (Getty)
February is LGBT+ History Month in the UK, however it’s also Black History Month in the US. This in turn has led to not a little confusion, as the UK celebrates Black History Month in October.
Some people have even called out the official LGBT+ History Month Twitter account for “choosing” to clash with the American Black History Month, with one person tweeting:
“Why f king February?? Huh???? Why February…. explain this to me. Don’t you even dare mention Valentine’s Day! Really? I am disappointed. I am all for gay Pride but I am Black first!”
