The EC letter came hours after the BJP approached the poll panel seeking cancellation of the Congress’s registration as a party and urging it to file an FIR and initiate “exemplary punitive action” against Sonia.
The case was lodged under IPC sections 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), a senior police officer of the Purba Medinipur district said.

Kolkata: A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delegation reached the Election Commission office in New Delhi on Thursday to lodge a complaint against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Hamidul Rehman over his remark at a public meeting made on March 2.
Rahman had said, “Our ancestors have said - jiska namak khate hain, uska namakharami nahi karte hain. After polls, we will have to meet those who would cheat us. Khela Hobe (the game will be played) with dishonest people.”
