Letter: An important message about vouchers

I’d like to thank the Rt. Rev. Robert Hirschfeld, Episcopal bishop of New Hampshire, for his thoughtful insights in the Feb. 10 “My Turn” piece on House Bill 20 (the school voucher bill currently moving through the state Legislature).
Because of his position, Bishop Hirschfeld has longstanding relationships with several private schools in the state. I assumed that he would welcome the prospect of a new funding source for private schools through local taxes. Instead, he describes the widening disparity among children in different communities in terms of their access to educational opportunity. He explained that this gap is caused by the inequitable way New Hampshire funds our public schools – “where excellence is dependent on property values.” He notes that the passage of HB 20 would only make this disparity worse, as it will drain funds from our public schools.
MANCHESTER â Every year, Manchester Christian Church rents the SNHU Arena for a special Christmas service attended by thousands of people.
For many believers, the COVID-19 crisis has proven to be what St. John of the Cross, a 16th-century Catholic mystic, called a âdark night of the soul.â
Last spring, houses of worship suspended services during a state-ordered shutdown to prevent contagion, denying members their solace and community. Some have since reopened with limited capacity, but others remain closed for in-person worship and meetings.
âI think probably the biggest challenge has been around peopleâs mental health and spiritual well-being,â said the Rev. Jason Wells, executive director of New Hampshire Council of Churches.
