DEHRADUN: The Uttarakhand BJP legislature party will meet today at 3pm to elect a new leader after Tirath Singh Rawat resigned as chief minister on Friday night.
Amid suspense over the new pick, BJP state chief Madan Kaushik has already confirmed that the new chief minister would be from among the party MLAs.
There are at least half a dozen legislators who are being regarded as frontrunners for the key post.
The names doing the rounds include former CM Trivendra Singh Rawat, tourism minister Satpal Maharaj, minister Bishan Singh Chuphal, legislator Pushkar Dhami, state party chief Madan Kaushik and higher education minister Dhan Singh Rawat.

Praising your leader is understandable but degrading our Gods by placing them at par with any human being is not right. I hope the new CM Tirath Singh Rawat understands this.

NEW DELHI: The BJP appears to have opted for a “faceless” leadership in Uttarakhand to contest next year’s Assembly elections in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In selecting Tirath Singh Rawat as the new chief minister, BJP has sought to silence the ambitions of factions within the state unit by sending out the message that Brand Modi will overwhelm the anti-incumbency against the state government.
On Friday, the saffron party projected a semblance of caste balance by appointing Madan Kasuhik, a Brahmin, as the state unit president. The new chief minister is a Kshatriya. Uttarakhand politics is known to have two strong electoral bases in the Brahmin and Kshatriya castes.

New Delhi: After days of suspense around his continuation in the post following an outburst of anger against him by other Bharatiya Janata Party leaders and legislators in the state, Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat resigned from his post on Tuesday, March 9.
