one provision in the bill allows the state to refinance debt for savings of $165 million. and the governor claims if the bill doesn t pass by friday, the state won t be able to save the full amount. but don t worry. not all legislation was stalled today in madison. governor walker proudly and defiantly signed a bill making it more difficult for the state to raise revenue during what he, himself describes as a time of fiscal crisis. it is that same crisis which has been and continues to be the governor s argument as to why he wants to dismantle public sector unions. he reiterated it earlier this evening in his fireside chat, an awkward name, awkward choice of name, given the president with which we associate fireside chat oversaw an era of union proliferation. the legislation is about balancing the budget, now and in the future.
protest ohio governor john kasich s efforts to curb collective bargaining. political observers are eager to hear what the president might say about that. some say he should just stay out of it but it s too late for that. last thursday the president said of wisconsin s budget battle everybody s got to make some adjustments to new fiscal realities, but then he added it seems more like an assault on unions and that last comment drove mr. obama s critics wild. republican senator lindsay graham called his comment inappropriate. graham said the president should focus on what s happening in washington, not wisconsin. but others say president obama should be involved. he says he s pro union and organized labor helped elect him in 2008 and perhaps now is the time because wisconsin governor scott walker is threatening to layoff 1500 workers if the bill doesn t pass. so talk back today. what should president obama s role be in wisconsin and ohio? send me your comments facebook.com/carol cnn,
paying 9%, all we re searching for is a balance. all we re trying to do is give our managers, our cities, our schools and even our the city the tools to control their costs if you can t control your costs you can t survive in business. you can t survive as a state. furthermore, frankly the reforms that we re gonna put in place are going to provide an opportunity for workers to not be cut off somewhere down the line. because they ve been over promised. this is not about attacking anybody this is about saving our state and making sure that ohio can be prosperous again. it fits into overall plan to make us competitive. greta: what happens if this bill doesn t pass? i believe it will pass. greta: we understand the impact of it. i m trying to figure out why you are passionate about it? i m passionate about the whole reform package get we are eight billion dollars in the hole. if you were eight billion
point. that s thanks to the compromise. the second argument is the one you don t have to make because people feel their lives improving because of hiring really does change. that is what the obama advisers say about the tax cut compromise. a conservative in the washington post credits it as stimulus two, not really about tax cuts. if it stimulates the economy people will feel it. what issue should he lose in 2011 that might hurt him in 2012, do you think? it is interesting when you say lose. i think what obama has had a hard time learning is how to fail successfully. the republicans know how to do that. they will set up conflicts for when there s a failure. for example, the bill doesn t pass, they go back to their folks and base since they see we are slowing down government. that s a good thing. these he s had more trouble with
jeopardy? sure am, wolf. welcome back. you re here for the final hour in what s been a tumultuous lame duck session. anything but lame. after star passes as it will here in the next hour, looks like the final time. i don t think the republicans can hold on this. it s expensive, $7.5 million cost per decade. these are first responders, people who went there in the emergencies and the people who came in for the cleanup who had gotten sick from toxic materials from one kind or the other. republicans having fought and run the tax breaks for the affluent americans, i don t think they could in good conscious they could oppose something to help the 9/11 victims. if the bill doesn t pass, will they worry about the democrats pounlding them to be unsympathetic to 9/11 first responders? talk about the democrats.
