Welcome, everyone, to what i was informed is the 11th installment of our series on leadership. I think some of you have been with us before, and i think as youve seen from some of these sessions, the meaning of leadership, lots of people have different interpretations, but the sense that theres not enough of it is something that is wildly shared among many of us in washington, and the ambition for this series is to call on leaders from national and local politics and business leaders, folks from education, arts, advocates, to try to understand what are the circumstances and the characteristics that enable some people to overcome real differences and lead. Our imagination at the Bipartisan Policy Center is not that the it was passive cohesion. Democracy is not a gentle game, but weve always had people who have understood how to overcome those differences to kind of reflect on this question on what does enable us to overcome the inherent distinctions in any kind of free society, we are d

Appreciate your company. Coming up on cnn newsroom, an agreement in principle on the debt ceiling. Washington has a plan to avoid a catastrophic default, but details still need to be ironned out, then it has to get through congress. Also ukraines top general issues a pointed message for his soldiers, russia, and the world. And we do begin in Washington A Late Night Agreement to try to prevent a looming debt crisis. The white house and republicans have reached a deal in principle to raise the debt ceiling and cap government spending. It is meant to avert the first u. S. Default in history, which could have disastrous consequences worldwide. Heres how u. S. House speaker Kevin Mccarthy characterized the breakthrough. After weeks of negotiate az we have come to an agreement in principle. We still have a lot of work to do, but i believe this is an agreement in principle. It has historic reductions in spending and lift people out of poverty into the work force, rein in government overreach.

Lowering our energy costs and most importantly curbing our spending. Which has run away. [indistinct chatter] thank you. Heads up. Senator schumer, how did it go in there today . It was a good and productive eating and we agreed that a default would be the worst outcome, and a bad situation for america and americas families. But we also have agreed that we need to pass a bipartisan bill mode with the eye partisan support in both chambers. I ask Speaker Mccarthy if he agreed with that, and he said yes. And his bill, of course is not a bipartisan bill. The bottom line is, that we all came to agreement that we would come to discussions in the way that Speaker Mccarthy described which was agreed to by all of us in the room together, and hopefully we can come to agreement. We do not have much time, but default is the worst alternative. And having a bipartisan bill in both chambers is the only way, the only way that we will do avoid faults. Hakeem and i are committed to getting that done. Mr
