Lowering our energy costs and most importantly curbing our spending. Which has run away. [indistinct chatter] thank you. Heads up. Senator schumer, how did it go in there today . It was a good and productive eating and we agreed that a default would be the worst outcome, and a bad situation for america and americas families. But we also have agreed that we need to pass a bipartisan bill mode with the eye partisan support in both chambers. I ask Speaker Mccarthy if he agreed with that, and he said yes. And his bill, of course is not a bipartisan bill. The bottom line is, that we all came to agreement that we would come to discussions in the way that Speaker Mccarthy described which was agreed to by all of us in the room together, and hopefully we can come to agreement. We do not have much time, but default is the worst alternative. And having a bipartisan bill in both chambers is the only way, the only way that we will do avoid faults. Hakeem and i are committed to getting that done. Mr. Jeffries it was a positive meeting. I thank the president for once again convening us. It was an open and honest, but a cordial discussion. We all agree that the only path forward is to reach a bipartisan agreement anchored in Common Ground. We all agree that default is not an acceptable option and must be avoided. And we all agreed that over the next few weeks we was to proceed with the fierce urgency of now in order to make sure we can reach that bipartisan commonsense, Common Ground agreement so we can protect the health and safety and economic well being of the american people. [inaudible] senator schumer were not going to get into negotiations out here. We have to come to Common Ground. Thats the only way this has gotten done. Its never gotten done with one party say, we have to do it my way. You have to get both parties in both houses together. Reporter how will you find Common Ground . Senator schumer youll know it when you see it. What that means is we will not sacrifice our values, they probably wont sacrifice their value, but we have to come together on something that can avoid default. Default is a disaster. Full stop. Everyone understood that in the room. I was glad to see that everyone understood what a disaster default was. Reporter to say youre closer to a deal than you were a week ago. Senator schumer as the leader said it was a much more cordial meeting. There were honest and real discussions about differences we have on a whole variety of issues. But it was all respectful and that was a good sign as well. Ok. You want to say one thing . [inaudible] i know its new for you but can you speak to the challenge, is President Biden a tough negotiator . Mr. Jeffries President Biden has done an extraordinary job of bringing us together last week, setting in motion staff discussions that have been positive and productive over the last several days. And then bringing us back together to have another positive discussion with a clear path forward in terms of reaching an agreement. Because default is not an option. Everyone agreed that was the case. Default would be a disaster for the american people. It would trigger a jobkilling recession. Default would crash the stock market and hurt the Retirement Security for millions of older americans. And a default would dramatically increase costs on people all across the country and it was a very positive development that everyone agreed was going to work with the urgency of now over the next week ortwo reach an agreement, avoiding the default and continue our efforts to be there for everyday americans. Senator schumer the one thing i want to say. What gave me the most hope, there were a bunch of thing, but that everyone, including the speaker, agreed we needed to be bipartisan. The idea of having partisan bill would get us nowhere. Everyone freely admitted that in the room. Reporter Speaker Mccarthy said the president appointed appointees or negotiators. What does that mean . Is it new staff . Senator schumer ill let the president talk about that but the bottom line the bipartisan negotiations weve had are going to continue, therell be a few additional players added to those.
