Flames spread to the engine. Witnesses watched a fire ball shoot out of the fuselage sending debris in the air. The entire airport was shut down during this initial cleanup. American says flight 383 bound for miami developed a mechanical problem during takeoff and had to abort. 161 passengers and nine crew members scrambled to get off the plane using emergency slides.
