This would make the US e-commerce firm the latest entrant in India s nascent but fast-growing satellite communications (satcom) market. Amazon would be pitted against the likes of Elon Musk-owned Starlink, Bharti-backed Oneweb and Reliance Industries Jio Satellite in India which has issued a new space policy earlier this year aimed at spurring private investments in the sector.
India is set to witness live demonstrations of satellite communication (satcom) services, with Bharti-backed Oneweb and Reliance Jio s satellite arm receiving permission from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to conduct these demonstrations. The companies have also applied for test spectrum to conduct trials on a wider scale. The satcom market in India is expected to grow substantially, particularly in rural and remote areas, with the potential for India s space economy to reach $13 billion by 2025.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has given permissions to Bharti-backed Oneweb and Reliance Jio’s satellite arm to do live demonstrations during an industry event, which will give consumers first-hand experience around satcom services.
“Administrative allocation of satellite spectrum, rather than auctions, is the key to ensuring equitable distribution and fostering innovation for meaningful connectivity,” said Isabelle Mauro, Director General, of GSOA. “We need a balanced and well-established approach to maximize the socio-economic benefits for all citizens and businesses across the country".
