We need a right to food | Morning Star

THIS week the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers’ Union (BFAWU) published a report that calls for the right to food for every citizen, every worker, every child across Britain. In this report we wanted to give voice to our members. We wanted to hear from them their experiences and whether food workers were themselves feeling “food insecure” and suffering from food poverty. The findings are shocking. Many of our members in the food industry the forgotten key workers, the very people who kept us all fed during the pandemic are struggling to feed themselves and their families. And the reason is simple: endemic low pay.

Burger King tweets women belong in the kitchen on International Women s Day

BURGER King has provoked fury by tweeting “women belong in the kitchen” on International Women’s Day. The fast-food giant followed up the initial message with another tweet, saying: “If they want to, of course. Yet only 20 per cent of chefs are women. We’re on a mission to change the gender ratio in the restaurant industry.” The stunt appeared to be designed to promote the company’s new scholarship programme, mentioned in a third tweet, which will help female employees “pursue their culinary dreams.” But many Twitter users condemned the company for its provocation on a day intended to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women worldwide.

Union to study Covid s impact on food workers

A NEW study will examine the experiences of food workers to highlight the impact of poverty during the coronavirus pandemic. The Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) will ask people employed across the food sector about the impact of the virus, including whether they have had to sacrifice food for themselves to feed others. Announcing the study today, the union said that it aimed to highlight how those who have continued working to feed Britain during the pandemic may be struggling themselves. The research is part of a campaign to have the right to food enshrined in law.  Efforts are already under way at Holyrood and Westminster, with a parliamentary Bill lodged by MSP Elaine Smith and work by MP Ian Byrne, while Liverpool became Britain’s first right-to-food city last month.

Trade unionist candidate for Liverpool Mayor receives endorsement from socialist MPs

THE trade unionist contender to become Labour’s candidate in the Liverpool mayoral election has been backed by leading socialist MPs. Former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, MPs Ian Lavery and Dawn Butler and Labour peer Shami Chakrabarti are supporting Councillor Anna Rothery, a long-standing member of Unite who would be the city’s first black leader if elected. She has been backed by the Unite and BFAWU unions so far. Ms Rothery, who has held the ceremonial post of lord mayor of Liverpool since 2019, is one of three women shortlisted by Labour to be the party’s candidate in the May election. The others are acting Mayor Wendy Simon and Councillor Ann O’Byrne.
