COVID cases still increasing; take precautions
Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Brown County’s total COVID-19 case numbers nearly doubled. At Thanksgiving, our count was 351; on Christmas Eve, it was 658.
By Dec. 28, Brown County’s total cases since March numbered 693 and total deaths were at eight. Four of those eight deaths have occurred since Thanksgiving.
For the sixth straight week, the Indiana State Department of Health put Brown County in “red” status or under “red” restrictions the highest level based on community spread of the virus. Twenty-three other counties also are at red, many of them rural counties.
In response to the “recent COVID surge in this area,” the Nashville McDonald’s switched to drive-thru and curbside pickup only starting Dec. 22, closing its indoor dining and carry-out options. These limits will continue while the county is on red status, the restaurant announced on its Facebook page.

Between Thanksgiving and New Year s, Americans throw away 25% more trash than any other time of the year. One of the biggest factors? Christmas wrapping materials.
Following holiday festivities, much of what covers seasonal surprises will get tossed in the trash.
During the pandemic, more people admit to buying online this year, creating more packaging material in trash cans.
This year, the Cold Canyon Landfill facility says they ve seen more boxes filling up residential recycling bins.
âUnfortunately, I think Iâve done a little too much online, San Luis Obispo resident Marti Valley said.
A walk through Eastern Iowa Airport Friday showed no shortage of decorative trees and wreaths, employees in colorful holiday sweaters and corn-on-the-cob-themed souvenirs just like any other year’s holiday travel season.
But the number of passengers passing those souvenirs locked inside a shop that’s temporarily closed during the pandemic is much different from previous holiday seasons.
At the height of the Thanksgiving rush, the Cedar Rapids airport had almost 1,500 passengers in a day. In past years, that day would have witnessed more than twice that many.
“The numbers were good compared to what we’ve been seeing,” said Marty Lenss, airport director. “But when compared to a Thanksgiving rush, the numbers were down quite a bit.”
By JIM THOMPSON | The Northwest Florida Daily News | Published: December 15, 2020 CRESTVIEW, Fla. (Tribune News Service) Just in time for Christmas, the mortgage on the family home of an Army 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) Green Beret soldier who died earlier this year in combat in Afghanistan has been paid in full. The mortgage was paid by the nonprofit Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation through its Gold Star Family Home Program. The foundation honors the memory of Stephen Siller, an off-duty New York firefighter who died while responding to the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks on the city. Sgt. 1st Class Javier Gutierrez, 28, was killed in action Feb. 8 in Afghanistan s Nangarhar province while serving with the Eglin Air Force Base-headquartered 7th Group. He had served in the Army for 10 years, including four years with Special Forces.
