SPRINGFIELD Two city firefighters who fell into a basement when a floor collapsed during a December fire and a colleague who aided in their rescue received their department’s highest honors Friday.
In a ceremony held at Symphony Hall, Fire Commissioner Bernard J. Calvi presented the Springfield Fire Department’s Medal of Honor to firefighter George Vasquez, and the Medal of Merit to firefighters Jonathan Shea and Justin Mestre for their bravery at the scene of a two-alarm fire on Dec. 24 that destroyed an East Forest Park home.
