Tens of thousands of germans have attended vigils for the 9 people murdered by a far right extremist on wednesday. Authorities are treating the shootings in the western town of hanau as a terror attack. Many of those who died were members of the citys turkish community, who were at two local smoking cafes. One was romanian. Its believed the gunman then killed his mother, before taking his own life. Our europe correspondent gavin lee is in hanau. The aftermath of what now looks to have been a premeditated racist attack in the quiet german town of hanau, filmed by those watching on in flats above. The suspected gunmans target, to shisha bars, cafes for smoking scented tobacco and popular germanys turkish and kurdish community. Nine people were killed, five victims were of turkish origin. Away from it. One even left the department of justice altogether in protest. We have our sara murray and evan perez outside the courthouse here in washington, and evan, i want to start with you. The attorney general said ultimately the decision lies with the judge here, judge Amy Berman Jackson. Just break down this decision for us on the seven counts and how she explained her sentencing decision. Reporter well, brianna, one of the things she said was she wasnt going to listen to the prosecutions memos, the memos that became so controversial. Youll remember the first one recommended seven to nine years. The second one said we leave it up to the judge. The judge says, i wasnt going to go with seven to nine years. She ended up at 40 months, which is about three and a half years in prison. And she said thats where she was going to go all along. But she did have the prosecutors talk a little bit about what happened behind the scenes. They said it was a miscommunication. She assured the jud
Election. Thats a big development, courtesy of the New York Times. We have that story in documents show. And later, Elizabeth Warren surging after the debate. Well show you the numbers that suggest one way shes rising. And then the ultimate fact choke stop and frisk policing the judge who issued the famous ruling, cutting down bloomberg policy is actually our exclusive guest on the beat. So there is a lot on the show. And we think it will be interesting. We begin with this. The truth still exists. The truth still matters. Those are the new words from federal judge Amy Berman Jackson today. She said them. They read they will aloud in court as she sentenced roger stone to prison. This is an historic day. This is judge trump recently attacked sentencing his longest serving adviser, to 40 months in prison. Thats just over three years. A prison term longer than what stones lawyers were petitioning for and longer than what donald trump has been publicly demanding. A reminder tonight as all t
Though tom steyer did not qualify to be on the debate stage in nevada last week, he has qualified to be on the debate stage in South Carolina this week. And, sure, why not . Nobody ever said this had to be an orderly process or even a remotely logical one. Its just how were doing it. Let me just point out something, though, about tom steyer and what it means that hes going to be on the debate stage tomorrow because its a little topsyturvy. Mike bloomberg was in the nevada debate last week, but he was not on the nevada ballot. Tom steyer was not in the nevada debate last week, but he was on the nevada ballot, and he actually did okay in nevada. I mean i dont know what his campaign was aiming at, but he did come in fifth place in nevada. Tom steyer came in below Elizabeth Warren and above Amy Klobuchar, and that might seem like a surprising result given that tom steyer didnt even qualify for that debate in nevada and given that senator klobuchars campaign has been getting a ton more atte
She said that their understanding is that the russians want to elect donald trump. Their preference is donald trump. The republicans, we are told, again confirming maggies reporting, were irate. One of them told the president who was also irate and kind of the rest is history. But what happened, what should have been a very important meeting to talk about strategy for defending the most important democratic action, which is elections, turned into what we see all the time now, a very, very partisan brawl. Do we know, maggie, from your reporting with your colleagues what part most upset the president about this . I think theres two aspects. One is clearly related to russia. The president does not want to hear information about russia and election interference. He, according to a number of aides, sees this as an asterisk on his election from 2016. He does not want to hear this is potentially happening again. I do think the fact this was related to adam schiff in the sense that schiff was
