I recognise that being so far detached from the threat of real violence and cultural erasure, I have the privilege to pick up and leave off my national pride whenever I choose. At the same time, I recognise that so many others in our current world cannot.
Bengali, whose origin can be traced back to the 6th century, is the second most spoken language in India. Not only is it a source of pride for millions today, but it also occupies an important place in India's 18th-century Renaissance movement.
International Mother Language Day is observed on February 21 every year. The aim of this day is to promote and preserve indigenous languages, encourage multilingualism and linguistic diversity and raise awareness on inclusive education.
