Massachusetts State Dinosaur: Podokesaurus holyokensis wins fan vote, lawmaker files legislation to officially declare state dinosaur MassLive.com 2/4/2021 Heather Morrison, masslive.com After more than 35,000 votes, the Podokesaurus holyokensis has won the fan favorite to become the Massachusetts State Dinosaur. State Rep. Jack Patrick Lewis, the Museum of Science and scientists from Mount Holyoke College and Amherst College’s Beneski Museum announced the decision in a livestream and filed legislation on Thursday. The Podokesaurus holyokensis, which means “swift-footed lizard of Holyoke,” was a fan favorite from the beginning, Lewis said. It was first discovered near Mt. Holyoke in 1910 by Mignon Talbot, the first woman to name and describe a dinosaur. The species was 3 to 6 feet in length, weighed approximately 90 pounds, and estimated to run 9 to 12 mph.
