djohnson@mojonews.com LISBON The New York man accused of attempting to kill Brian Custer with a razor blade in November will have a mental evaluation conducted before any further hearings are held in Common Pleas Court. Naquan P. McCorkle, 35, Lynbrook, N.Y., a suburb of New York city appeared with his defense attorney, Chris Amato, before Judge Scott Washam on Thursday regarding recent motions in the case. Amato recently filed a motion to have McCorkle evaluated both regarding his competency to stand trial and a request to change McCorkle’s plea to not guilty by reason of insanity. Washam approved Amato’s request to have McCorkle evaluated and he remains in custody at the county jail on a $100,000 cash or surety bond. A status conference is scheduled for May 13 and Washam indicated he hoped the evaluation could be completed at the jail and a written report submitted in time for that hearing. A jury trial is scheduled for May 24.
