The Minnesota Vikings Need to Re-Sign Todd Davis
1 2 minutes read
There’s no debating it: things were ugly on defense this year. Mike Zimmer’s beloved group had long been Minnesota’s strength. Quite the opposite was true in 2020. Perhaps the most important task for Minnesota as they enter the offseason rests in finding a solution. Somewhere on Zimmer Ridge Ranch, Minnesota’s surly coach is losing sleep as he tries to find this elusive, yet extremely important solution. Though easily overlooked, one of the moves the Minnesota Vikings ought to make is to re-sign linebacker Todd Davis. He is part of the solution.

So there I was, diligently working on this piece when a friend of mine calls shortly before dinner. I can t talk, I say, and that s OK, he says, but let me ask you one question: What do you think about what s happening at the capitol? Which capitol, I say, the state or in D.C? Turn the news on, he says. We hang up. Holy spit, I say. Is this a Beer Hall in Munich, 1923, or, after I see that chilling photo of the barricaded door in the House of Representatives, with all those officers pointing their guns at the door (Capitol police? Secret Service? The romantic in me hoped one of them was a Congressman), Chile, 1973? We live, as the Chinese curse says, in interesting times.

Well, that wasn t fun, and I doubt I will surprise any of you when I note that only two players on the entire defense saw their Pro Football Focus (PFF) season grade increase after yesterday s slaughter, but I bet you can only name one of them! The offense was a mixed bag when it came to season grade movement, but we saw some predictable shifts there, for good and ill. On the other hand, I was actually able to watch the game yesterday, Merry frackin Christmas. Ah well. So, for the second to last game of the 2020 season, you can find below the overall PFF

I started this piece in a truly foul mood, but much to my surprise, writing it has actually picked my mood up, which I would guess no one else on these boards can say after considering this game! And I can t even blame my blues on having seen the game (nope, it didn t air here, I got Vilma, the Seahawks and the Washington FT, instead), but there it is. Anyhoo, below are the overall Pro Football Focus
SEASON grades as of Game 14 (Week 15) of the 2020 season at home against the Bears, whose league s worst offense! just scored 30 or more points for the third week in a row, and whose David Montgomery just ran for over 100 yards for the third time in four weeks, so clearly something is starting to click there. A reminder, yet again, that I can t see behind the PFF paywall, so these are the overall season grades, no
EAGAN, Minn. Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson is akin to Allstate in the eyes of his teammate Kris Boyd.
Maybe that s because, as the insurance company s tagline says, the Vikings defense is in good hands with the fourth-year linebacker. Or it could be that Wilson s play, in a year of ups and downs, provides a level of insurance for a unit trekking through a season of transition.
Wilson can t pinpoint the origin, but it s a moniker that implies that his teammates can count on him to be there when things go awry. And it isn t the only nickname he has been given. After a win against the Detroit Lions, his fellow linebacker Eric Kendricks called him a walking turnover. Wilson and Kendricks are tied for first among all linebackers with three interceptions, and Wilson leads his position in combined interceptions, forced fumbles and opponent fumble recoveries (six total).
