Iowa National Guard Delivers State of the Guard Address

The guard held its annual Condition of the Guard Address at the Iowa Capitol, where it reported on its efforts during the pandemic and the August derecho. It s troops have been monitoring traffic at Test Iowa sites since the first drive-thru site opened in April. It s also assisted with food delivery during the pandemic, and with massive clean-up in Cedar Rapids after the August derecho. Major General Ben Corell oversees 900 troops in the Iowa National Guard.

Iowa National Guard Sending 250 Troops to Washington

By Jason Taylor Jan 15, 2021 IOWA - The Iowa National Guard is now sending 250 troops to Washington DC to help with security for President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration next week. Only 15 guard members were originally scheduled to go, but the state agreed to massively boost the number after last week s riots at the U.S. Capitol. The Iowa guard troops are expected to arrive in Washington Saturday or Sunday. No troops are scheduled to help with security at the Iowa Capitol. Iowa National Guard Major General Ben Corell said he a Governor Kim Reynolds consulted before agreeing to the deployment to Washington.

Iowa National Guard Adjutant General Ben Corell says 250 Iowa Guard soldiers and airmen are being deployed to Washington, D.C. to provide security for next week’s inauguration. “The goal is to get them on the ground, out in the national Capitol region, by this weekend,” Corell said late this morning. “…We will send an advance party out hopefully today so we can get leadership on the ground so when our soldiers and airmen arrive, they know where to go, where they’re staying, where they’re going to be fed…and what is the mission that we’re going to ask them to do.”
