NWS creates thunderstorm categories, most severe to trigger cell phone alerts

The National Weather Service has announced the designation of three categories of severe thunderstorms, and they say that the detection of the most severe category will trigger a wireless emergency alert on cell phones for those in the warned area. Weather officials say the three categories from least to most severe damage possible will be “base”, “considerable”, and “destructive”, and those tags will be applied to thunderstorm warnings. According to weather officials, the destructive category – which triggers an alert on cell phones – is a thunderstorm that is producing baseball-size or larger hail and/or 80 mph winds. Weather officials say the considerable category is a thunderstorm that is producing golf ball-size or larger hail and/or 70 mph winds, while the base category is a thunderstorm that is producing quarter-size hail or larger and/or 58 mph winds.
