The National Weather Service has announced the designation of three categories of severe thunderstorms, and they say that the detection of the most severe category will trigger a wireless emergency alert on cell phones for those in the warned area.
Weather officials say the three categories from least to most severe damage possible will be âbaseâ, âconsiderableâ, and âdestructiveâ, and those tags will be applied to thunderstorm warnings.
According to weather officials, the destructive category â which triggers an alert on cell phones â is a thunderstorm that is producing baseball-size or larger hail and/or 80 mph winds.
Weather officials say the considerable category is a thunderstorm that is producing golf ball-size or larger hail and/or 70 mph winds, while the base category is a thunderstorm that is producing quarter-size hail or larger and/or 58 mph winds.

Portions of Rollingwood Country Estates and the Curtis Community were without power for a few hours on Friday after a power line fell and caused a small fire.
The Jasper County Sheriffâs Department is investigating the latest in a string of burglaries that have occurred in the Curtis Community.
Jasper businessman Derek Billingsley says his vehicle and his wifeâs vehicle were both burglarized early Tuesday morning. Billingsley said it happened while he was awake in the house, which is located on Highway 63 West about 2 miles outside of the Jasper city limits.
Billingsley said cash and other items were taken.
Jasper County Chief Deputy Scotty Duncan said at this point itâs not known if this crime is related to the others that have occurred recently in Curtis. The others included at least two house burglaries in which guns were taken.
