Renondo Beach has erected 15 pallet cabins into a homeless shelter The 8ft by 8ft aluminium cabins will be used for temporary housing They are set up with bunk beds for two people, shelves, heat, air conditioning, and electrical panels Pallet, a Seattle-based company, originally designed the units to help with disaster relief in the wake of Hurricane Katrina The shelter is being run through $300,000 in community development block grants and $410,000 from county grant funds The CARES Act fund is also supplying $420,000 to cover capital costs The shelter is being tested in its current site for six months Other locations had been suggested but received pushback from locals

Francine Orr / Los Angeles Times via Getty Images Intensive care unit bed capacity continues to diminish quickly in Los Angeles County, even as the county continues to reach new daily highs in coronavirus infections. The new one-day case total for Thursday stands at a staggering 12,741, while ICU availability fell to 7.7 percent nearly 50 percent below the threshold set by California’s statewide Department of Public Health that led to the current stay-at-home order and regional shutdown of things like on-site outdoor dining. Per the Los Angeles Times, LA County is seeing double the number of “daily coronavirus cases than it saw on Nov. 30, and quadruple its daily coronavirus cases since mid-November. Cumulatively, L.A. County has tallied 488,519 coronavirus cases and 8,151 COVID-19 deaths.”

Gatherings in Manhattan Beach The nation, state and county all recognize the worsening pandemic crisis. Both California and LA County have issued strict guidelines to reduce the spread. In contrast, our MB City Council asks people to sit and gather in support of local businesses. While the support of our local merchants and their employees is absolutely the right thing to do, encouraging people to gather in public places and suggesting that they disinfect the areas when they leave continues to send the wrong message at the wrong time. In a city where simple, everyday mask compliance remains a struggle, the thought that people would actually make the effort to sanitize is beyond the pale. More than likely, people will use the outdoor spaces to eat or drink what they just purchased for take-out, thus requiring them to take off their masks for extended periods with non-household members, defeating the very purpose of the new health orders.
