San Jose native Tonya McKenzie is the first African American woman to run for Redondo Beach City Council for the Fourth District, and if victorious, she will be the first black woman to hold the city council position. With District 4 being the least voting block (residents are voting the least), McKenzie believes that conversation, collaboration, and commonality can turn that around.

City Clerk Eleanor Manzano announced at this week’s Redondo Beach City Council meeting that results from the Mar. 2 municipal election will be tabulated on Friday.
Manzano said her team of 10 people has been working “non-stop” since the election to verify signatures on ballots postmarked by election day.
“We were inundated,” she said of this election, which was conducted entirely by mail because of restrictions designed to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus. “Normally we have a lot more ballots by the time the election comes around.”
Just over 5,100 ballots were received before election day. A count of those showed incumbents leading the races for mayor and city attorney, as well as for council members in Districts 1, 2, and 4.
Renondo Beach has erected 15 pallet cabins into a homeless shelter
The 8ft by 8ft aluminium cabins will be used for temporary housing
They are set up with bunk beds for two people, shelves, heat, air conditioning, and electrical panels
Pallet, a Seattle-based company, originally designed the units to help with disaster relief in the wake of Hurricane Katrina
The shelter is being run through $300,000 in community development block grants and $410,000 from county grant funds
The CARES Act fund is also supplying $420,000 to cover capital costs
The shelter is being tested in its current site for six months
Other locations had been suggested but received pushback from locals
