CSPAN3 The Civil War Union Gen John Bufords Gettysburg Defense December 3, 2017

He is a National Renowned speaker and the authority on union calvary, particularly operations in the east. What i like about his canon of books, he has been boldly exploring all sorts of things and taking his expiration in neat directions. He is working on a mini script about George Gordon meade. It does not necessarily seem like a cavalry operation to me and it makes him one of the most interesting historians working in the field today. Coming to us from columbus, ohio, to talk about his Award Winning book on john buford, eric wittenberg. [applause] wittenberg it is always up pleasure to be here and i appreciate the opportunity to be here today. It is also always nobody wants to be the guy who goes right after lunch. If anybody falls asleep because of the good food, i promise i wont be offended. And bear with me, im not good at standing still. Chris was talking about the fact that i have written a lot of books, i have a bad case of adult add, which also means i have a trouble standing

What is the latest . Jay just an incredible scene. I will step out of the shot so our cameraman can zoom in. This is the mount vernon antique center, billed as the oldest and Largest Center in the entire region. Right now it does not look all that much, but the first news photographer on the scene, the video that he got just as the fire came out at about 9 15 i think he got here about 25 minutes after, just incredible, flames shooting into the night sky on christmas night, engulfing and destroying this very large building here. Here is the situation, according to the deputy fire chief, whom we spoke with moments ago, they believe the fire started on the second floor. Beca integrity of the building, there was a significant collapse of the second floor, crashing onto the first floor, which is then ignited the fire even more, fueling it even more. We are told that it will take hours and hours for them to safely put the fire out. They came here initially thinking they could hopefully put t

CSPAN3 Battle Of Rhode Island Artifacts January 22, 2018

The first rhode island regiment. This is the first integrated regiment. This is part of the flag carried by that regimen during the battle of rhode island on august 28 and 29, 1778. We know that because this particular note, which is that, in 1878, almost a hundred years after the battle, pieces of flag at the battle of rhode island, it is modest, humble, just a small piece of fabric, but tells an extraordinary story about the people fighting for their and in a war in the name of that freedom. Then we have perhaps one of the pieces of evidence about the worst side of the conflict, which is the violence. This is a cannonball. It is a solid shot found on a field, not very far from here. This is solid iron which can cause an extraordinary amount of damage. While it is attributed to the battle of rhode island, we are not positive that it actually was part of the battle. It is really large. It comes from the kind of canon that the americans do not have at the time, even though the americans

CSPAN3 The Presidency U S Soviet Union Relations Post-World War II January 22, 2018

U. S. Foreign relations. After him will be professor of ukrainian history and the director of the Ukrainian Research institute at harvard university. We will start with frank. Frank first of all, i want to join others in thinking mel and will. It is an honor to be in this room with most with so many people whose work i respect so much. What i have done is basically extrapolate from the oped i wrote a light of some comments the people made yesterday, other oped, particularly mels question about irrationality. I also have the perspective of George Kennan. Its been easy for americans to feel irritated, angry, exasperated, resentful or disgusted with the russian government to whether that country is being run by lennon, stalin, khrushchev, or putin. The quashing of pole, and the most recent aggressions against georgia and ukraine. Not to mention the berlin in cuban crisis of half a century ago and the egregious interference in our election last year. It is therefore understandable, but als

CSPAN3 Lectures In History June 22, 2024

And of course are on the revolutionary generation. Todays lecture is going to be on military aspects of the revolutionary war, mostly in the north and south. Next week, when we have our guest speaker she will talk about some of the western campaigns in more detail. We have that coming up. That will be exciting. There are other aspects of the war at home, financing the war womens participation in the war that we will not get to date today, but we will before future classes. I want to start by one of the best books on the revolution is a book called the men who lost america. In this book, it is argued that british generals are often described as incompetent or indecisive, but the author argues that they were smart competitive men accomplished professionals, military professionals, and the reason why they failed is not due to psychotic character fails, but because they faced insurmountable obstacles in trying to fight a war in america. I will lay out some of those obstacles, and they will
