International Bat Appreciation Day, celebrated annually on April 17, was designed to dispel myths about the flying mammals and spread word of the benefits the creatures have for the ecosystem.
The Connecticut DEEP and DECD are holding their sixth annual Bat Appreciation Day on Sept. 10 at New Old-Gate Prison and Copper Mines in East Granby. The historic site is a favorite hibernation site for bats in the area.
“This time of year they’re injured in their first flight or fall out of the nest or have unfortunate contact with cats,” said Jenny Dickson, director of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s wildlife division. “Like young everything else, they make mistakes.”
