Smithville elections: Alan Hemphill, Nancy Towry reelected to school board

Hemphill received 613 votes, or 50.3%, compared to Helmcamp s 606 votes, or 49.7%. Towry received 737 votes, or 58.35%, to defeat challenger Michele Rutherford, who received 526 votes, or 41.65%. The Place 3 and Place 4 seats were the only school board spots up for election.  Members of the seven-person Smithville school board, who serve without pay, are elected to three-year terms. According to the Bastrop County Elections Department, 1,294 total ballots were cast in the Smithville school board elections from 8,132 registered voters, a nearly 16% voter turnout for the May 1 election, the highest of any local government in Bastrop County. Place 3 election Towry gained momentum after the early vote was tallied  in which she received 396 votes compared to Rutherford s 300  and fended off the challenge to her reelection by more than 200 votes after the election day vote was counted, according to the unofficial results.

Bastrop City Council calls May election for Place 2, Place 4 Filing for a place on the ballot began Wednesday and runs through 5 p.m. Feb. 12. Rogers has filed for reelection, according to the city secretary s office. Ennis announced he will not seek reelection.  The council on Tuesday, during its first meeting of 2021, also approved contractual agreements to hold a joint election with the Bastrop school district and for election services from the Bastrop County Elections Department.  The city will save money by having a joint election, according to City Secretary Ann Franklin, who said the cost to the city for a joint election would be about $16,570 while holding an election alone would cost the city about $24,400.
