Members of the Save South Winchester campaign had originally planned to hold a socially distanced march around the site perimeter on January 24. The aim was to plant 100 wild roses (the Hampshire rose) close to the site entrance near Down Farm off Port Lane, within walking distance of Compton Down, Oliver’s Battery and Hursley. Further details are yet to be released by campaign leaders Cllr David Killeen, chairman of Hursley Parish Council, and county councillor Jan Warwick.
A CAMPAIGN for a new road crossing in Winchester appears close to success. Campaigners have been calling for a crossing on Andover Road to connect the growing estate of Barton Farm with Weeke and Harestock. Parents with children at the recently-opened Barton Farm Primary Academy were involved, fearing that the road posed a danger to children. The campaign attracted cross-party support including city MP Steve Brine, local Liberal Democrats and parish councillors. Now Hampshire County Council (HCC) has said it is drawing up plans for a crossing. Senior county councillor Rob Humby on Friday briefed Mr Brine, Cllr Jan Warwick and Kings Barton resident Mike Slinn who last year presented a petition to the county council.

The Environment Agency also told them to move possessions and valuables out of ground floor rooms. Residents in flood-hit areas were urged to turn off gas, electricity and water. The agency issued flood warnings for the upper River Avon between Chippenham and Melksham and for the Bradford on Avon areas as swollen rivers swollen burst their banks. At Bradford on Avon, the Environment Agency installed the flood defence barrier to prevent the River Avon flooding properties in the Bull Pit area while Church Street was flooded but passable with care.
