Alex Schaaf of Yellow Ostrich s new single River 93

BlogsCommunityMusicArtsScreenEat & DrinkLegals Daily Distraction: Float down River 93 with Alex Schaaf of Yellow Ostrich Listen to a previously unreleased song in advance of Like a Bird: An Alex Schaaf Anthology (2010-2021), out later this month on Barsuk Columbus Alive After spending some years looping his vocals alongside fuzzy guitars in Brooklyn indie-rock act Yellow Ostrich, Alex Schaaf became a touring member of the Tallest Man on Earth, then moved to Minneapolis and started a new, mellower project, Human Heat.  Later this month, Barsuk Records will release  Like a Bird: An Alex Schaaf Anthology (2010-2021), a compilation of songs released under his own name and his band monikers, plus a new, previously unreleased track with which I ve become smitten.  River 93 features Schaaf s smooth-but-searching vocals that call to mind vintage Midlake alongside a perfectly uncomplicated digital beat (think Owen Ashworth) and sparse piano/organ, plus some welcome lap st

Review: The Prom - Modern Fix

Modern Fix (Barsuk Records) A Seattle based piano, bass, and drums trio is an excellent change from the standard indie rock sound that focuses on guitars.  I am a huge fan of piano based music and if your not you should give it a try.  The Prom gives indie icons Bright Eyes a run for their money with their somber, challenging effort “Under the Same Stars.”  The Prom takes a much more laid back approach than their counterparts Bright Eyes (if this is possible) who is normally a little more in your face.  I love the use of strings, flute, and horn throughout the album.  My favorite track would have to be “Living In The Past” which is about not being able to let go and learning how to change.  Singer James Mendenhall has an absolutely amazing voice.  It seems he fell in love with the piano after playing guitar for years.  It sort of reminds me of Jets to Brazil singer Blake Schwarzenbach who was the guitarist for Jawbreaker before focusing on the piano in JTB.  I really l

Review: Little Champions - Modern Fix

Review: Little Champions (Barsuk Records) Very interesting pop songs.  It’s not the type of pop you’d find on the radio, however, with guitar work reminiscent of the earlier, more thoughtful R.E.M and keyboard melodies set to sound like a traditional piano to act as a counter point melody to the guitar lines.  Flip-flopping between male and female lead vocals and pensively restrained pretty sounds and noisy more damaging rock sounds, the second album from this Seattle based quartet is never tedious and is diverse in a well-adjusted sense.  Without stepping too far out of bounds here, I’d like to say that, although Little Champions are good, the music wouldn’’t be out of place at your local coffee shop as you sink into the chair, collected works of Pushkin on your lap, the music diddles away unobtrusively in the background not interrupting the great Russian’s translated prose, but every now and then you notice your finger is tapping out the beat on the back cover or your s

Community Creates: An indie rock guide to getting together / In Depth // Drowned In Sound

January 5th, 2006 To create a community is a noble feat, an unselfish sharing of culture and ideas. It’s the basis for this here website and it’s the foundation for a healthy resurgence of hot dang, top popping North American indie rock bands currently falling from our alt-skies. Be it the Canadian lupine star scene or Omaha’s folk casio crooners, the sound is being brought together by a combination of sensitive souls coming together to create trouble. After spending the summer months driving across the USA’s vast landscape, from desert hills to snow covered mountains and swamp based party towns, it was clear to me that there was much musical promise in even the most macabre of digs. Record stores in sleepy towns were packed full of kids being excited by unknown EPs and hand-stamped 7 splits from bands that lived within their own state boundaries. And the big city lights are no different, scoring bohemian crowds eager to spot their own next solo superstar or local Decembe
