Supreme Court affirms 30-day suspension of Circuit Judge Barry Sims

The Arkansas Supreme Court today accepted a judicial panel’s recommendation that Pulaski Circuit Judge Barry Sims be suspended without pay for 30 days and take other remedial measures for rude treatment of lawyers in his court.
The Supreme Court said the recommendation was “just and proper.” Sims was given a 90-day suspension, with 60 days suspended, and order to take a class in “mindfulness, patience or civility” and to hire a counselor to consult on treatment of professionals in his court.

The order said it was to take effect immediately.

The state Judicial Discipline and Discipline Commission has issued a letter of censure and recommendation of suspension of
Circuit Judge Barry Sims for episodes of rude treatment of public defenders in his court.
Sims, who hears cases in Pulaski and Perry Counties, is recommended for a 90-day suspension, with 60 days held in abeyance for a year, but the Arkansas Supreme Court is the final arbiter.

David Sachar, director of the commission, said Sims, a circuit judge since 2003 and previously a district judge, had agreed to the censure and recommendation for suspension rather than contest the allegations. SHAKEN residents described their horror after a man was left in a serious condition following a stabbing in broad daylight. Emergency services, including an air ambulance, were called to Walnut Street, Blackburn, which runs between Cedar Street and Whalley New Road, shortly before 4pm on Saturday. Upon arrival a man in his fifties was found in a serious condition having received stab wounds during an assault, with officers now searching for three Asian men in connection with the incident. The victim remains in hospital in what is believed to be a stable condition.
