ashore yesterday afternoon, we were knew it was one of the strongest storms to hit the united states. day tligt day brought harrowing evidence of the destruction a storm like that brings. this is ft. myers beach, one of the barrier u lands that ian slammed into as a category five storm. before the hurricane, it was a popular beach defendant naugs destination. much of it is leveled. one local resident told the local paper, ft. myers beach is gone. this is the causeway leading to sanibel island to the west of for the murz beach. it s the only road to that island. it impassable. all the bridges to pine island also failed. this evening nbc nightly news anchor spoke with the mayor of sanibel for her concern about the people that didn t evacuate before the storm and maybe trapped there. we have significant numbers of people contact us, people they knew that were on the island. we ve been logging those meticulously and getting those out to our first responders. we had about 200
explosion of the only bridge connecting russia with the annexed territory of crimea. now, the blast partially collapsed the kerch bridge and paralyzed a key supply route from moscow s faltering war in ukraine. but this bridge isn t just logistically important, it s also a huge symbol for the kremlin in its attempt to reunify crimea with the russian mainland. ukraine has not claimed responsibility for this, but after the blast in kyiv, people can be seen taking selfies in front of a billboard depicting the image of the bridge on fire. that s not the only thing you re seeing from ukraine mocking the explosion. fred pleitgen joins us now. fred is in kyiv. he has the latest developments. what are you hearing, fred, about who s behind this explosion. reporter: yeah, well, the russians are moving very quickly to point the finger of blame at the ukrainians. this is quite interesting because i ve been following a lot of telegram channels coming out of russia. a lot of top russian

it s the top of the hour on cnn newsroom. i m alisyn camerota in new york. hurricane ian has killed at least 13 people. it s the strongest storm to hit the west coast of florida in nearly 20 years. local officials say we should brace for that number of victims to rise. the life and death danger from ian continues as it pushes northeast, still pummelling florida. rescuers were pulling people from high water all day and night. survivors describe no time to wait as people had to carry children, as you can see, through chest-high waters. ian made landfall just west of cape coral. our cnn drone shows the devastation there. i mean obviously you can just see these are supposed to be streets, but they are completely flooded. nearby ft. myers and naples further south are both decimated. countless neighborhoods are still submerged in the floodwaters at this hour. the communities of sanibel and pine island are now cut off from the mainland after ian washed away parts of this causewa
