Letters: Preventing the criminalization of the mentally ill and lowering their rates of recidivism

I strongly agree with Sheriff William Redman’s April 10 Viewpoint, “Taking a proactive approach to the mental health crisis in our community,” and I commend the efforts he has made to make his department more responsive to mental health calls. The mental health crisis in our communities needs to be addressed in order to prevent the criminalization of the mentally ill and to lower their rates of recidivism. I agree that opening a mental health hub and a long-term facility in our community for individuals suffering from mental illness would provide a much-needed alternative to incarceration and would help those individuals receive proper evaluations and mental health care.

Public Weighs in on Lewisboro Police Reform Report

March 14, 2021 at 9:00 AM SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. – For a town frequently split in acrimonious debate over questions of racial justice and law enforcement, an online hearing last week on proposed changes in town policing produced some rare agreement. Most of the more than two dozen speakers generally applauded the Lewisboro Police Department’s efforts toward equity and a number of them agreed that Lewisboro’s police officers should not be subjected to anonymous, third-party sniping about their conduct. To be sure, however, differences continue to exist. For many, the draft recommendations of Lewisboro’s Police Committee on Reform and Reinvention were solutions in search of a nonexistent problem.
